Maiden Voyage

Somebody crack a bottle of champagne over the front steps!

My hope for this blog is to chronicle our continuing home improvement efforts. And to keep me moving forward on those 'half-finished' projects--of which we have many. Unfortunately, I don't think I have any true 'before' photos.  The day we closed, I went into hyper-overdrive and am just now coming up for air.

We had been looking for the right house for several years and finally found it last spring. I immediately saw potential. Mr. Chaos immediately saw a lifetime of work. In a testament of his love for me, he relented and we moved forward with an offer.  But he was most assuredly not enthusiastic.

To date we have:
  • Removed all the carpet from the house and replaced it with either ceramic tile or matching hardwood (it was dirty, smelly, red, groddy, horrible carpet);
  • Refinished all of the wood that was here;
  • Removed what was quite possibly the NARSTIEST (Yes Narsty--it's an adjective meaning ten times worse than regular nasty per Tommy on Sarah's House) bathroom vanity know to man;
  • Installed new a new vanity and ceramic tile in the kids' bath;
  • Installed ceramic tile in the master bath;
  • Taken down 5 enormous trees that were far too close for comfort--and with all of the wind we had here in April and May, I'm really glad we did;
  • Re-built the front porch steps;
  • Removed overgrown landscaping;
  • Regraded the slope near the house to improve drainage;
  • Reseeded;
  • Cleaned;
  • Scrubbed;
  • Painted (all but two rooms at this point!)
And we almost have all of the doors back up. Yay!

Tangent: Folks, for the love of all that is Holy, please don't try to fix leaks with scotch tape!

Tangent Part Deux: Some people should just NOT have pets. Of any kind. Ever.

And speaking of pets, just to complicate matters further, we adopted a Newfoundland mix from the Humane society several weeks after moving in.  But more on that later...

Last summer was busy one for us. We bought a house (the worst one in the the best neighborhood kind of thing), worked on it all summer, the boys accidentally joined the local swim team, we moved, school started a week later, soccer kicked in...well, you get the idea.

As summer 2011 rolls around, I hope to complete a few projects (decorate the front porch, paint the front door, refinish the back deck, sort through all that stuff we dropped in the basement, paint the kitchen table, change out the chandelier; trim some things, plant some things, finish the office, do some winterizing-type projects), get to the kids' swim meets, teach the dog a few manners, and spend some quality time in the hammock. With my family.

Until next time,
L.
